Lygodium palmatum, American climbing fern, has been on my mind a lot lately. Since the first (and only) time I saw this fascinating, vine-like fern growing at Garden In the Woods I knew it was something I needed to see in the wild. The more I learn about it, the more intrigued I become.
I recently learned that this very special plant might be growing on one or more of our Trust properties. That`s a pretty big deal. Also called Hartford fern, this plant has the "special distinction of having been the first plant protected by law in the United States. This occurred in 1869, when Connecticut passed legislation to curb rampant collection for Christmas decorations." It`s currently a species of special concern in CT. Both possible locations were protected long before I was hired (one year ago this week, by the way) so I`m not taking credit but it sure feels good to be a part of keeping these areas protected.
Now to find them. It is a dream of mine to conduct plant surveys on all our properties. I`m no expert so some of this will be learning as I go and a big part of that will be gaining a better understanding of habitats. This plant seems to prefer peaty, wet, acidic, and sunny spots. My trip to the pine-barren spot last week was an attempt to better understand its habitat. Lack of daylight foiled my plans that day but helped shed some light on associated flora. Armed with a little more knowledge and a little more daylight, I`m hopeful I`ll find this plant soon.
The last photo comes from Northeast Ferns (S. Chadde) and the quote comes from GoBotany.

230520 – abandoned red cedar homesteads of the pacific northwest, under moss and ferns; set in #midjourney v5.1
.
while exploring the lush rainforest in northern washington, a pair of curious kids stumbled upon a hidden cluster of abandoned cedar cabins, blanketed by moss and embraced by ferns. constructed by intrepid settlers in the late 1800s, these once-cozy dwellings provided refuge from the unforgiving elements, but had long since succumbed to mother nature. as the youngsters cautiously stepped inside, they uncovered relics of the past – rusted tools and threadbare garments – telling the story of the families who once forged home within these timeworn walls.

You can’t have a rainforest without ferns. And although ferns can be found to some degree in most environments, they are in greater abundance in rainforests and serve a variety of functions for the ecology of the forest, maintaining the forest’s health. In total there are over 10,560 fern species with the majority native to the rainforest.
For starters ferns, whether growing in the canopy or on the ground are important nitrogen fixers that help facilitate the growth of other plant genre especially in the canopy. In deforested and degraded areas ferns (if they are a species that can handle more sunlight) are often some of the pioneer species that colonize these areas fixing the nitrogen and ph of the soil for other plants to follow.
Ferns also help prevent soil erosion because most terrestrial fern species prefer well drained soils, and on terrain with an incline hold the soil in place. They are also good at shading the forest floor, keeping moisture close to the ground which balances the over-all ambient temperature of the forest.
Ferns are more adept at capturing and utilizing the moisture from passing clouds and morning dew which also helps keeps the forest green even in the drier times of year.
You also probably noticed that the air feels fresher in areas where there are a lot of ferns. That is not just because many, if not most fern species grow well in the shade (which is always cooler), but it is also because ferns are more adept than the average plant at absorbing pollutants and chemicals from the air. This is one of the reasons why they are a popular recommended house plant because they can grow in less light, and photosynthesize providing fresh O2 while they also help clean your apartment/home of toxins.
These purifying moisture rich plants also attract many different insects as a place of refuge and occasionally a source of food with their leaves and edible spores. Which in turn attracts frogs and snakes. Ferns with their many facets and ecological benefits are an essential symbol of the rainforest. #🌿 #ferns #helechos #samanbaia #rainforest #ecology #ecosystem #plants #fern #rainforesteye #selvatropical #florestatropical #ferngully

One of the smallest yet most impactful plants in the garden; Adiantum venustum, a hardy “Maidenhair Fern” of ineffable delicacy that breaks the resolve of even the most ardent fern hater. Bizarrely such people do exist. Along with Alchemilla mollis, a plant whose presence seems magnified by rain as today, it’s rusty, soft pinnae dripping like molten gold on barely visible ebony rachis.
Possibly about to be given a far more prominent role in the garden as under consideration for planting as a ground cover in the new Paeony garden.
