What fish has no bones, three large teeth, and has existed for more than 400 million years? Today we wade into west coast waters for #EverythingButTheBirdFriday to learn about the Pacific Lamprey (Entosphenus tridentatus).
The slender, scaleless Pacific Lamprey can grow up to 30 inches in length and, while they look like an eel, they aren’t closely related.
Like salmon, they are anadromous, meaning they migrate from freshwater to the ocean and back to freshwater to spawn. They use their jawless, suction cup-like mouth to travel hundreds, and in some cases thousands, of miles to their breeding grounds losing up to a third of their length during the trip since adults stop feeding when they hit freshwater.
These ancient fish have historically played a crucial role in west coast rivers and streams as an important food source and an indicator of a healthy ecosystem. They are also culturally significant to the Columbia Basin tribes and Nez Perce who consider Pacific Lamprey the “first fish” whose return is a sign of spring, in addition to being a prized source of nourishment.
Unfortunately, the Pacific Lamprey population has sharply declined over the past 70 years which is why they’re listed as a species of concern. Threats to lamprey include dams, road culverts, degraded water quality, contaminants, water diversions and habitat degradation. A petition to list Pacific Lamprey under the Endangered Species Act was submitted by the Center for Biological Diversity and other organizations in the early 2000s but the US Fish and Wildlife Service declined the petition. To address the lamprey’s decline, the Columbia River treaty tribes created the Tribal Pacific Lamprey Restoration Plan.
The Oregon Zoo has a Pacific Lamprey exhibit if you’d like to see these fascinating creatures up close.
